Case Study

Studio Cero

Studio Cero makes jewelry by hand in solid metals, in small series, at its workshop in Santiago. We gave it a brand, a way of photographing the pieces and a website.

A model with wet-look hair covers one eye with her hand, wearing two chunky rings and a star-shaped earring, against a pale blue-grey wall.

01 · The Result

A Brand DrawnBy Hand.

The wordmark is drawn, not typeset. The photography stays close and quiet. The website gives each piece room to be looked at.
  • A model in a cream long-sleeved top crosses her arms, wearing a gold drop earring and layered chains and rings.
  • A close view of a star-shaped earring with a dark stone, hanging from a model's ear on a fine gold chain.
  • A model in a white vest looks down at a thick silver collar necklace with a small crystal pendant.
  • A model seen from behind, with long straight dark hair held by a gold collar with a flower ornament.

02 · What They Asked For

Jewelry MadeIn Small Series.

Studio Cero is a Chilean jewelry brand. Its pieces are handcrafted in solid metals and made in small series in its own workshop in Santiago.
The brand needed an identity that looked as made as the jewelry, photography that showed the pieces on the body, and a website that sold them without noise.
  • A model bends forward with her eyes closed, wearing a silver chain earring and a thin silver necklace with a textured pendant.
  • The back of a model in a sheer cream top, with a fine silver chain hanging down her spine.

03 · What We Found

The Pieces Are Irregular On Purpose. The Brand Should Be Too.

Each piece carries the marks of the hand that made it. A rigid, geometric identity would argue with that. The brand had to allow for imperfection and still look assured.

04 · What We Built, In Order

An Identity, A LookAnd A Shop.

The work covered the wordmark, the direction of the photography, the website and the way each piece is shown.
  1. 01

    Wordmark

The word cero drawn in thick rounded black shapes on a white grid, with pencil notes around it.

The name drawn by hand in soft, rounded black shapes, and tested on a construction grid.

  2. 02

    Art Direction

A model in a cream top crouches and hugs her knees, looking over her shoulder, wearing gold rings and drop earrings.

Direction for the photography: soft light, a pale set and one piece in focus on the body.

  3. 03

    Website

A shop page with a large silver ring with dark stones on a pale ground, beside smaller product tiles.

A quiet online shop that sets each piece alone on a plain ground.

  4. 04

    Product Photography

A textured silver ring set with dark stones, on a pale grey ground.

Each piece shot alone on a pale ground, so the metal and the stones lead.

The rim of a steel canister on a black ground, with a chunky textured silver chain draped over its edge.

05 · The One Decision

Keep The FrameQuiet.

Pale grounds, soft light and little type. When the frame goes dark, it is to let textured silver catch the light. The pieces carry the colour and the texture.

06 · What This Taught Us

Make The BrandLook Made.

Studio Cero works in solid metal, in small series, with its hands. The identity took its cue from that: a drawn mark, uneven forms and plain surfaces.
When a product shows the hand behind it, the brand should show it too. Polish that hides the maker works against the piece.
